20 Years of Hand-Built Freedom: Turn 14 Distribution Powers the Cycle Source Custom Bike Show

There is no substitute for the roar of open pipes reverberating off the rocks of the Black Hills during Sturgis Rally week. For decades, South Dakota’s Black Hills have been the epicenter of two-wheeled performance and American motorcycle culture, drawing riders from far and wide to take part in this two-week-long celebration of the lifestyle.

On Sunday, August 9, the heart of that noise was centered squarely on the legendary Iron Horse Saloon for a landmark moment in two-wheeled history: the 20th Annual Cycle Source Magazine Custom Bike Show. For two decades, this event has served as the main stage for bike builders ranging from grassroots garage fabricators to master craftspeople. As the presenting sponsor for this milestone 20th-anniversary bash, Turn 14 Distribution was proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the community, celebrating twenty years of pure, unadulterated motorcycle culture.

GRASSROOTS CROWDS AND BROTHERHOOD ON THE MAIN STAGE

From heavy hitters in the custom motorcycle industry to garage fabricators rolling in on their everyday riders, the venue was packed wall-to-wall with builders and enthusiasts across all experience levels. What truly set the tone for the afternoon was the undeniable sense of brotherhood and camaraderie on display. Old friends reconnected over pristine builds, total strangers swapped fabrication advice, and the shared passion for hand-crafted motorcycles created an electric party atmosphere that only Sturgis can deliver. It wasn’t just a competition; it was a gathering of like-minded enthusiasts who live and breathe custom bikes.

KNUCKLEHEADS TO TWIN CAMS: A SPECTRUM OF TWO-WHEELED IRON

If there was one takeaway from this year’s show, it was the sheer diversity of two-wheeled machines that filled the Iron Horse Saloon. Spanning a massive layout of 30 distinct entry classes, the event welcomed every make, model, era, and style for a shot at top honors. From Honda Monkeys to Milwaukee-Eights, and working man’s grassroots builds to tire-shredding performance baggers, the show celebrated the creativity of the builder rather than the platform itself.

The competitive landscape left no style untouched. Categories ranged from traditional Chopper, Bobber, and Digger styles to specialized build philosophies like Derake, Antique Radical, and Lowriders. Showgoers were treated to every motorcycle style Sturgis has to offer—from intricate custom paint and metalwork adorning the Chicano-style lowriders to classic choppers with towering forks. It was a true smorgasbord of vibrant colors, loud pipes, and bold customization.

PICKING THE WINNERS: T14 CHOICE AND BEST OF SHOW

Even among such a stacked field, two bikes stood out above the crowd. First, the striking blue Knucklehead build by CJ Stepnoski caught the eye of the Turn 14 Distribution crew. Featuring a raw metal springer front end, custom high-rise handlebars, and a unique hand-fabricated sissy bar, this classic Harley-Davidson rolled on aggressive knobby tires and a solid rear wheel to complete the stance. Finished off in a rich blue coat, it was an easy choice for the Turn 14 Distribution Choice Award, bridging the gap between timeless vintage architecture and high-concept custom detail.

Meanwhile, the coveted $5,000 Cash Best of Show grand prize was awarded to master craftsman Steve Iacona of Iacona Custom Cycles, who took top honors for his fully custom creation. Dubbed Phoenix, the bike is powered by the beating heart of a 1992 Harley-Davidson Sportster housed inside a custom-built bobber chassis. Outfitted with dual Mikuni slide carburetors, a custom-routed exhaust, and high-performance suspension components from Öhlins, Iacona’s masterpiece was meticulously built to honor the firefighters of New York City.

INDUSTRY HEAVYWEIGHTS BRING THE GOODS

Beyond the trophies and cash, Turn 14 Distribution brought interactive product displays right to the heart of the action, giving attendees an up-close look at high-performance gear from industry leaders like Mustang Motorcycle Products, Öhlins, Rockford Fosgate, and Kuryakyn.

The celebration extended even further thanks to generous class prize bundles packed with premium aftermarket gear from our featured brand partners. Speed & Strength hooked up the Sportster and M8 class winners with fresh riding gear, including its signature True Grit Riding Shirt. Biker’s Choice outfitted the Working Man’s and FXR class winners with custom floor mats and Billet Cushioned Throttle-By-Wire Grips.

Twin Power supplied the winners of the Performance Class with full cases of 20W-50 synthetic oil and 55mm Aluminum High Flow Intake Manifolds, while Kuryakyn rewarded the Bagger, Trike, and People’s Choice winners with ISO Grips, Teardrop Mirrors, and premium Hoodlum and Dame vintage leather jackets and vests. Cycle Source kept the rest of the crowd gear-ready with custom 20th-anniversary patches, limited-edition t-shirts, and exclusive event merchandise.

KEEPING ‘EM RUNNING

When the final trophies were handed out, and the last rounds of applause faded into the Black Hills sky, one thing remained abundantly clear: the spirit of custom motorcycle building is as raw, loud, and alive as it was two decades ago. These events are about far more than pristine finishes and polished chrome; they are about preserving hand-built freedom and passing the torch to the next generation of fabricators.

Thank you to Cycle Source Magazine and all of our partner brands for supporting this incredible community. Here’s to twenty years in the books, and many more down the road.
