Choosing the right tire for your UTV or SxS is arguably the most critical decision you’ll make for your build. Since they’re the primary point of contact, your choice in tires dictates whether your rig dominates the terrain or falls victim to it. The right rubber can determine if your RZR slices through the desert or your Maverick loses its spirit to the recovery gear.
With hundreds of options flooding the market, the selection process can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to navigate it alone.
At Turn 14 Distribution, we don’t just sell parts; we use them. We’ve tapped into the collective expertise of our own team, avid riders who live for the dirt, to help guide you in making an educated decision for your next set of rubber.
The journey to the perfect setup begins with an honest look at your driving style and the terrain you most often explore. Whether you’re navigating technical mountain trails or pinned at 70 mph in the dunes, the tire you choose will make or break the experience.

SAND: THE SCIENCE OF THE PADDLE
We start where the physics are more demanding: the sand. Driving in the dunes is an exercise in finesse and flotation. Whether you frequent Glamis, St. Anthony’s, Coos Bay, Coral Pink, or Silver Lake, tire selection is crucial. In most other terrains, grip is found by digging into the surface, but sand is a different story. Sand tires help you float over the dunes and are designed to surf over the sandy sea. Driving on deep sand with the wrong tire will bury you to the frame in seconds, leaving you stranded and waiting for rescue.
Choosing the right sand tire is also a balance of performance and longevity. Most sand tires come in two options: a buffed carcass or a molded tire. Both options follow a similar design theory and are typically paired with either buffed front paddles or a specialized mohawk tire that guides the vehicle like a rudder. Either construction offers varying paddle counts to match your UTV’s power output for the best traction on this loose surface.
A buffed tire carcass is the more performance-oriented option, constructed as a shaved-down tire with chemically bonded paddles. This specialized design aggressively sheds rotational mass to minimize unsprung weight, delivering surgical handling and quicker spool-up in high-output machines. However, this level of performance comes at a cost. Buffed paddle tires command a higher price point while trading off durability. Thinning the tire carcass saves weight, but that increases the risk of punctures when the terrain gets more technical.
Molded tires follow the more traditional tire manufacturing processes. This style offers a stronger carcass at a lower price point, with size options for most sport SxS models. There are some marginal performance tradeoffs, but the molded construction is the ideal choice for more casual riders. Tensor and DragonFire Racing are our most popular options for paddling through the sand:
- Tensor Sand Series: This tire quickly took over the molded tire market. Engineered with performance in mind, the Sand Series is exceptionally lightweight and provides increased traction in the sand. Their patent-pending Velocity Grid technology combines a 2-ply bias construction with additional biting edges that deliver additional control. The 33-inch variants are a perfect match for the Maverick X3, Turbo S, Turbo R, or Pro XP. For those pushing the limits of the new high-performance era, the 35-inch models introduced in 2024 were designed specifically for the Maverick R and RZR Pro R.
- DragonFire Kopa Paddle: A great option for Sport SxS models that typically run 30-inch and 32-inch setups. These tires strike a rare balance, remaining lightweight without sacrificing the puncture resistance needed for aggressive driving. The design is all about precision: the front Mohawks and deep rear paddles ensure your vehicle has great traction and doesn’t “push” sand when turning.
MUD AND SNOW: THE BRUTE FORCE TACTIC
When the terrain turns from soft to full-on slop, your driving strategy has to shift with it. In these conditions, finesse is optional, and brute force is encouraged. With the pedal to the metal, wheels spinning, and debris flying, mud and snow wheeling can be some of the most thrilling 10 mph rides you’ll ever experience.
However, standard all-terrains won’t cut it here. Similar to surfing the sand, traversing the mud and snow requires a specialized scoop to propel the vehicle through the sludge, and a tread design with an extreme tread depth. Self-cleaning lugs are a must; without them, your specialized tread turns into a racing slick, halting any forward momentum.
Here are our top recommendations to keep your UTV moving through the muck:
- ITP Cryptid: Unlike the mythical beings it takes its name from, this tire is a common sight in the wilderness. Built for die-hard mud riders, the specialized chevron tread design creates a scoop that ejects mud and snow, keeping the contact patch clean and your forward momentum intact.
- QuadBoss QBT680: With sizes ranging from 28 all the way up to 40 inches, this tire fits any build. The offset tread cleans out debris and prevents buildup, yet it still offers a surprisingly smooth ride on hard-pack trails.
- Maxxis Zilla: The ultimate “best of both worlds” mud tire. Maxxis designed this for riders who don’t necessarily live in a swamp, but regularly encounter deep mud or heavy snow on otherwise hard-pack trails. It provides the clawing power needed to navigate the muck without sacrificing a comfortable ride on firmer dirt.
- Maxxis Maxxzilla: The Zilla’s high-performance sibling, putting all of its mud-traversing capabilities into its own tire. Designed specifically for bogging and mudding in deep terrain, its unique tread pattern allows for a complete clean-out of debris, ensuring you never lose your bite.
ROCK CRAWLING: THE TECHNICAL CLIMB
Climbing from the thick ooze of the swamp to the rocky ledges, UTV drivers need to shift tactics again in this terrain. Rock crawling is some of the most technical driving you can do in a UTV. Here, wheel speed takes a backseat to precision and patience. Suspension travel and body flex are one thing, but here, grip is king.
Rock-crawling tires are designed with a larger footprint and squared edges to maximize the contact patch. This specialized geometry provides the traction needed to conquer vertical obstacles and prevent “the walk of shame”—or worse, the roll of shame—back down the hill. Here are the standouts that we recommend for your next bouldering excursion:
- Maxxis Roxxzilla: The Roxxzilla takes the crown when it comes to rock crawling. Backed by a legacy of podium finishes at King of the Hammers, Maxxis engineered the Roxxzilla with a sticky rubber compound and soft tread that is optimal for grabbing on to almost any terrain.
- BF Goodrich KM3: The latest edition of BFG’s legendary off-road lineup, the KM3, stands as one of the toughest tires on the market. While falling more into the All-Terrain classification, the KM3 still provides the grip and durability needed to tackle technical obstacles while providing a smooth ride when the terrain evens out.
- DragonFire Racing 4Peak: This tire is a relatively new offering, but it’s already making a big impact on UTV drivers. DragonFire engineered this tire for maximum grip in any crawling situation. The 4Peak also offers excellent sidewall traction, allowing the driver to hold a line even with the steering wheel fully cranked. The unique tread pattern keeps the tires free of rocks and debris, reduces road noise, and extends the tire’s lifespan.
Desert and High Speed: Precision at the Limit
The open desert is where speed and precision combine. When you’re foot-to-the-floor through sandy canyons, you need a tire that offers predictable handling and can stand up to the harsh wilderness. Sudden shifts in the route, or unseen hazards, can turn a desert joyride into a long wait for a tow without the right rubber.

In this terrain, durability is key, but best combined with a narrow width and a tight lug pattern on the tread. Big, wide tires will fight your vehicle. The bigger footprint will pull the UTV into the ruts you aren’t aiming for, leading to an unpredictable ride. A slimmer tire profile makes high-speed navigation much more agreeable, gaining you more speed and better control. Tensor especially shines in this category, especially with these two options:
- Tensor Regulator 2: This design steps up the durability of the original Regulator with the lightweight performance of the Tensor Desert Race Series, or DSR, tire. Its sidewall ribs offer premier protection against the jagged desert terrain, while keeping the profile narrow for control in the ruts.
- Tensor DSR: For even more performance, look no further than the DSR. With a storied racing legacy at Baja, The Mint 400, and the San Felipe 250, this is the tire of choice for desert racers. The lightweight and tight tread lugs offer peak performance, but at a cost. The DSR is a race-spec tire, which prioritizes performance over longevity at a higher price point.
All-Terrain: The Versatile Explorer
If you are like most riders, your SxS isn’t dedicated to just one type of terrain. The whole reason for getting behind the wheel of these off-road machines is to explore, tackling any obstacle that might cross the path to your destination. This requires a tire that can get you just about anywhere, including back home. If you’re in one of the states where UTVs are allowed on the roads, your whole trip could be done in your Can-Am or Polaris, meaning that the asphalt is part of the terrain.
From dirt to mud and back home again, here are our recommendations for your well-rounded UTV:
- ITP Coyote: Originally gaining popularity as the factory spec tire on the Polaris RZR Turbo S, the Coyote remains a top choice across all UTVs and SxS’s thanks to its all-around performance. These tires feature a narrow width for better control, excellent braking performance, and are all made right here in the USA.
- QuadBoss 846: For those depending on their vehicles for productivity, this tire is a top choice. This 8-ply radial offers a smooth, consistent ride to and from the job site while providing exceptional grip on the clock. It’s a durable workhorse for the ranch or scouting for a hunt.
- QuadBoss 808: Who says off-roading can’t be comfortable? The 808 is a great option for fully enclosed HVAC UTV models. The even tread design provides a quiet ride, while the aggressive sidewall traction and cool look make it a standout for all-around use.
- Atturo Trail Blade X/T SxS: Applying its success in light truck off-roading, the Atturo Trail Blade X/T SxS is specialized for the powersports market. The 8-ply, steel-belted construction, combined with its multi-dimensional tread pattern, offers the traction of a mud tire with the smooth, quiet ride of an all-terrain tire. Atturo stands behind the Trail Blade with a rare trail hazard protection warranty, covering normal punctures and accidents.
- BFGoodrich KM3: Once again, this tire leads for its versatility. Riders have trusted it for years, and demand remains consistently high due to its ability to handle rocks, mud, and dirt while maintaining the longevity you hope for on mixed surfaces.
The Right Setup for the Road Ahead
Whether you’re hunting for traction on a technical climb or looking for the perfect float over a silt bed, your tire choice defines your vehicle’s personality. The goal isn’t just to replace what came from the factory; it’s to bridge the gap between how your UTV was delivered and how you actually intend to use it. When you match the right tread to your specific terrain, you stop fighting your machine and start trusting it.
