
The Jeep and BFGoodrich pairing is an absolute off-road legacy. For decades, BFGoodrich set the standard for exactly what a mud-terrain tire should be. The classic combination of a purpose-built Jeep rolling on BFGoodrich rubber was the undeniable gold standard on trails across the country.
Lately, the off-road tire market has grown incredibly crowded with new names and flashy tread patterns. But let us set the record straight right here and now: BFGoodrich is still producing some of the toughest, most capable tires on the planet. The Mud-Terrain T/A KM3 is absolute proof of that.
If you are outfitting a Jeep for backcountry overlanding, thick woods, or serious rock crawling, the KM3 belongs at the top of your list. And rather than relying only on spec sheets to prove it, we tested them ourselves.
We loaded up and headed to the Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area (AOAA) in Eastern Pennsylvania for a highly anticipated day out of the office. But before we get to that, we need to take a look at how BFGoodrich earned its legendary reputation in the first place.
RADIAL ORIGINS
To understand the true potential of the BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM3, we first have to take a trip back to the mid-1970s. As America’s interstate highway system expanded, tire manufacturers focused on perfecting performance for paved surfaces, leaving off-roaders in the dust. Drivers who preferred to venture beyond the pavement were forced to make a compromise: choose the traction they needed on the trail or the comfort and drivability they wanted on the road. There was no real middle ground. In fact, there was no such thing as an all-terrain tire. That changed when BFGoodrich decided drivers shouldn’t have to choose.
Tires designed for the dirt in this era utilized bias-ply carcass construction. This production method uses crisscrossed layers of body cords, typically made of nylon, rayon, or polyester, at a 30 to 45-degree angle, creating a consistent thickness across the sidewall and tread. While this makes for a robust, off-road tire, it suffers from excessive heat buildup, flat spotting, and faster tread wear. Together, these drawbacks compromised on-road manners and relegated off-road tires to the most serious adventurers.
BFGoodrich recognized the limitations of the off-road tire offerings available at the time and saw a need for innovation. In 1975, their engineers set their sights on creating a new breed of tire that was just as capable through less-than-ideal terrain, while still keeping the driver comfortable on the interstate. The answer was to bring radial tire construction into the world of off-roading.
Radial tire construction was developed to correct some of the unwanted characteristics of bias-ply tires. The body cords, typically made of steel belts, run radially, or directly from bead to bead, perpendicular to the tire tread. Additional reinforcing belts are concentrated beneath the tread, separating it from the sidewall and creating a stable contact patch while retaining flexibility. Radial tires provide improved comfort on the road and greater versatility once the road runs out.
To bring the new radial off-road tire to life, BFGoodrich engineers did not confine themselves to the lab. They opted for grueling real-world testing at the 1976 SCORE Baja 1000 to see how the tire performed in race conditions. While the inaugural run did not end on the podium, the lessons the team learned helped spawn the Radial All-Terrain T/A. The first of its kind, it laid the groundwork for decades of top Baja finishes and the even more capable Mud-Terrain T/A.
FROM DUST TO MUD
With the immediate success of the BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A, the engineers knew there was even more potential to this tire lineage. Where the all-terrain base was created to strike a balance between on- and off-road performance, the Mud-Terrain T/A was geared toward more dedicated enthusiasts.

This new descendant featured a much deeper tread depth with larger knobs purpose-built to eject the viscous slop that could bog down less specialized tires. It also featured more pliable sidewalls made possible by radial construction, creating a more versatile footprint and vastly improved grip across the journey. While the Mud-Terrain T/A was conceived for serious off-road use, it did not fall into the same pitfalls as its bias-ply ancestors. For the first time, off-roaders could equip a tire capable of crawling through the swamp while still driving home without stability or excessive heat issues on the road.
The original Mud-Terrain T/A set the bar for serious off-road grip, and through five generations and over thirty years of innovation, BFGoodrich debuted the Mud-Terrain T/A KM3, the current king of off-road tires.
FIELD TRIP
To get a true sense of the KM3’s potential, we decided to put decades of innovation to the test. We equipped Truck and Off-Road Senior Sales Specialist Ryan Gartenmayer’s Jeep JK Wrangler and Senior Marketing Coordinator Ryan Evans’s Jeep Gladiator Rubicon with sets of KM3 tires, then headed to the rugged trails of Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area (AOAA) to see what they could do.
While AOAA has its fair share of rocks, most of our day was spent navigating deeply rutted forest trails, tight tree lines, and notoriously thick, heavy mud. To conquer the slop, both Jeeps have a lengthy list of modifications and massive 40×13.5 BFG KM3s to keep them moving forward through the slick clay. Spinning massive 40-inch tires through thick mud puts immense stress on a rig, but Gartenmyer had his axles bulletproofed with Revolution Gear 5.13s and Artec trusses, while Evans had his BFG rubber wrapped around stunning bronze Weld Ridge Wheels. These Jeeps were built for abuse, and the tires had to match that energy.
KING OF THE TRAIL
Overlanding and heavy trail riding demand total reliability. Being miles from the closest pavement and even further from the relief of a fully equipped tire shop, a sidewall puncture is not just a minor inconvenience. It is a trip-ender. Those worries are quelled, though, as BFGoodrich specifically engineered this tire to be more than up to the task.

With our adventure complete, we took the time to break down why the KM3 still rules the off-road:
- Mud-Phobic Bars: This feature was the real MVP of our AOAA trip. The tread on the KM3 is purpose-built to forcefully eject compacted mud, thick clay, and sticky silt as the tire spins. In heavy slop, lesser tires pack up with dirt and essentially turn into racing slicks. Because the BFG tread actively clears itself, our test vehicles maintained serious traction even in the absolute worst ruts. This allowed both Jeeps to claw through the deep stuff with total confidence.
- CoreGard Max Technology: Derived directly from BFG’s Baja-winning race tires, this incredible technology gives the KM3 a massive boost in sidewall toughness. Plunging into deep, muddy water is always a gamble because you never know what is hiding at the bottom. This fortified sidewall protected us against hidden tree roots and jagged rocks, while protecting the critical failure zones where weaker tires typically blow out.
- Krawl-TEK Compound: While our day was mostly focused on the mud, the occasional wet rock obstacle required massive grip to overcome. This highly advanced compound is designed to grab onto slick rock and loose, wet dirt. It provides unmatched traction when climbing steep, unpredictable grades that would leave other vehicles winch-bound.
- Linear Flex Zones: Running a 40-inch tire is all about maximizing your footprint. Airing down for the trail meant a sprawling contact patch that was ready to literally envelop obstacles. This wider footprint gripped the earth and pulled our heavy rigs smoothly over the terrain instead of spinning mindlessly against it.

After a day at AOAA, BFGoodrich’s legendary reputation shone through every time the KM3 clawed through another deep rut or gripped its way over treacherous terrain. The same commitment to real-world performance that started with BFGoodrich’s early radial tires is still evident in the KM3 today.
